Top 6 Treasure Hunting Tips

Here at Economy Self Storage, one thing that comes to mind when we think of summer is treasure hunting. No, not the Blackbeard pirate type pillaging for gold, but the yard sale treasure hunting kind. Our Honey Brook, PA community is filled with excellent opportunities to find your very own “pot of gold” every weekend. Here are a few tips we’ve collected to make your hunting successful and fun! Argh!

1. Dress for success: Since yard sales start early, you’ll want to avoid having wet feet from tromping through dew laden lawns. Trade the flip flops for sneakers or comfortable flats that you don’t mind getting a bit dirty. Also have on hand a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. You don’t want crispy skin keeping you from finding that next great treasure.

2. Map out your route: Check the local paper, community board at the grocery store and hairdresser, Craigslist and front yards for advertisements of sales. Then, plan accordingly. Think about where you predict the best stuff will be, and start there. Remember, good stuff goes fast. The last thing you want to do on a fine yard sale morning is waste time and gas money driving back and forth along the same road because you didn’t have a plan.

3. Stock up on small bills and change: In the morning, many yard sale hosts may not have many small bills on hand for change. The last thing you want to do is to have to walk away from something you love, simply because they can’t change a fifty dollar bill.

4. Pack snacks: Make sure you have a stash of water and some snacks in the car for when the mid-morning munchies come calling. Remember, there is a lot of exercise involved in yard sale shopping: lifting items, putting them back down, walking from table to table; the last thing we’d want is for you to become dehydrated!

5. Bring a bag: Have a tote in the car to carry your newly found treasures home in. Some sellers may provide bags, but most of them won’t, so be prepared. If you are hunting for larger items like furniture, it may be helpful to pick up a collapsible dolly that you can store in your trunk.

6. Be prepared to bargain: Most yard sale hosts are savvy enough to price their items a bit higher than they actually expect to get, because negotiation is half the fun of having a sale. Feel free to make a reasonable offer; remember, the worst thing they can say is no.

We wish you the best of luck on your summer treasure hunting! Be sure to stop in and see us and tell us what great things you’ve found!
